Why Our Grandparents Didn’t Have Seasonal Allergies

Warmer temperatures bring seasonal allergies, and it seems like everyone is suffering this year…except our grandparents. Have you ever spent time outside with your grandparents and wondered why they aren’t sneezing? Older generations didn’t experience seasonal allergies like Millennials, and there are many reasons why.

They Spent a Lot of Time Outside

Our grandparents didn’t stay indoors all day like today’s generation. They played outside and enjoyed nature, so they were exposed to allergens and parasites on a daily basis. The hygiene hypothesis states that less exposure to germs or allergic diseases results in a weaker immune system. While newer generations stay inside when they get the sniffles, our grandparents didn’t let anything stop them from having fun outdoors.

They Didn’t Take Medication

Medication

Older generations didn’t have the medicine we have now. When they got sick, they didn’t stock up on over the counter allergy medication like Benadryl and Vicks. They relied on broths and natural remedies to get better. In return, it boosted their immune systems and allergies couldn’t attack. This generation is actually becoming immune to some medication because of the daily usage.

They Grew Their Own Fruits and Vegetables

Vegetables

There is a link between food and allergies. Oral allergy syndrome is a condition where the immune system identifies the part of the food that is similar to pollen or other allergens and elicits an allergic reaction. Since our grandparents grew their own fruits and vegetables, they were constantly around the main culprits responsible for allergies: grass and pollen. We know that exposure results in less allergies, so our grandparents received the necessary nutrition to stay healthy without the sneezing and hives.

Climate Change is Making Allergies Worse

Climate change

If it seems like allergies are getting worse each year, it isn’t just your imagination. Warmer temperatures due to climate change means that plants are growing and pollinating more. Older generations experienced less climate change and in return, didn’t develop seasonal allergies.
